ABOUT ME
MEET THE ARTIST
Maui artist Carla Gangini has been inspired by the island's beauty for over 35 years, she fell in love with oil painting about 12 years ago. Her goal is to capture and interpret the essence of Maui's landscapes, flowers, fruits and even its livestock for the viewer to enjoy everyday in their home. The color pallet is an essential part of how she conveys the island's unique feeling. Carla paints on location around the island and also at her home studio in Wailuku. Participating in classes and exhibits at the Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center has helped Carla grow and develop as an artist. Her paintings can be found in Hui's gift shop, Monarch Collective in Makawao, Wings in Paia town and at the Lauren Roth Art Boutique in Kailua, Oahu. Contact Carla via email for information on commissions and purchasing artwork.
“If I wanted perfection, I would take a photo- but I paint to create something even more captivating.”
I've always loved creating. My dad was an artist, and he set me up at an easel when I was just five years old—I still have that very first painting. Growing up, I dreamed of three things: getting married, becoming a mom, and being an artist.
In 1990, I moved to Maui, met my husband, and we've now been married for 34 wonderful years. While raising our daughters, I found ways to keep my creative spirit alive—whether it was crafting with shells I’d collected, decorating our home, or occasionally finding time to paint. Once our daughters were grown, I took an oil painting class at the Hui No‘eau, and I’ve been hooked ever since. Though I enjoy working with different mediums, there’s something about the painterly process of oils that feels like home to me.
Spending time outdoors—walking, hiking, picnicking with friends—is where I find much of my inspiration. I love painting on location; the challenge of capturing shifting light and changing elements keeps my work fresh and dynamic. In my studio, I can slow down, work on larger pieces, and dive deeper into each canvas.
I’m incredibly grateful for the time I now have to devote to painting, and I deeply appreciate everyone who supports my work. Thanks to them, and this journey, I can truly say—I’m living my dream.
“I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Phil. 3:14
